AfaRise Fellowship 2025–2027 | Apply Now for a Fully Remote, Two-Year Racial Justice Program

Are you an African or Afro-descendant changemaker with a bold vision to dismantle racial injustice? The AfaRise Fellowship 2025–2027, hosted by the African Futures Lab (AfaLab), is now accepting applications for a fully remote two-year fellowship program focused on reparatory justice, decolonial leadership, and Afro-feminist organizing.

Designed for activists, artists, scholars, and innovators based in Africa or Europe, the AfaRise Fellowship empowers early-stage projects tackling racial injustice across race, gender, climate, and economic justice.


About the African Futures Lab (AfaLab)

Founded by Liliane Umubyeyi and Amah Edoh following the global reckoning on racial justice in 2020, the African Futures Lab is committed to dismantling systems built on colonialism and slavery. It serves as a hub for advocacy, research, and cross-border solidarity among African and Afro-diasporic communities.

In alignment with the African Union’s declaration of 2025 as the Year of Justice for Africans and People of African Descent, the AfaRise Fellowship is a timely initiative to resource racial justice leadership across the globe.


Fellowship Objectives

The AfaRise Fellowship seeks to support early-stage, visionary projects aimed at decolonizing narratives, transforming systems, and fostering global solidarity. Projects can take any form—including research, writing, art, podcasts, organizing campaigns, or exhibitions—so long as they center racial and social justice.

Fellows will engage in collaborative learning, peer exchange, and receive support to develop and amplify their work across global platforms.


Program Structure & Benefits

  • Duration: Two years (2025–2027)
  • Format: Fully remote
  • Stipend: €200 per working session
  • Engagement: Bi-monthly virtual meetings

Core Components

  • Strategic Peer Exchange: Regular virtual meetings for project sharing, strategy development, and peer learning.
  • Fellow-Led Learning: Thematic sessions on reparatory justice intersecting with gender, climate, AI, and economic justice.
  • Collaborative Projects: Opportunities to co-create with other fellows and AfaLab staff.

Eligibility Criteria

The fellowship is open to individuals based in Africa or Europe working on early-stage projects with a clear racial justice focus.

Required:

  • Proven dedication to racial justice and systemic change.
  • A clearly defined project in the early stages of development.
  • Deep knowledge of African, European, or Afro-diasporic contexts.
  • Strong vision, creativity, and commitment to collaborative work.

Preferred:

  • Multilingual fluency (especially in French and English).
  • Interdisciplinary or cross-sectoral experience.

Application Process & Selection

Applications will be reviewed for authenticity, vision, diversity, and project relevance. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed virtually. Only eight fellows will be selected to ensure diverse representation across geography and issue areas.
