Are you passionate about legal research and ready to pursue a PhD in a dynamic and international academic environment? The University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is now accepting applications for fully funded PhD fellowships at the Department of Law, with positions commencing in January 2026.
This is a unique opportunity for highly motivated candidates to join a vibrant legal research community at one of Scandinavia’s leading institutions. The fellowship spans three years and includes extensive research, academic training, and teaching responsibilities.
About the PhD Program
The Faculty of Business and Social Sciences at SDU offers a supportive and engaging academic setting. As a PhD fellow, you will be expected to conduct original research in law, participate in PhD-level courses, and contribute to the department’s teaching activities in Danish and/or English.
Your primary task will be to develop a PhD thesis aligned with the department’s research priorities. In addition to writing your dissertation, you’ll attend international conferences, collaborate with faculty and fellow researchers, and support the academic visibility of the department.
SDU PhD Fellowship Program (Key Responsibilities)

Conduct advanced legal research and write a PhD thesis within the department’s research framework.

Participate actively in the academic environment through seminars, conferences, and collaboration.

Contribute to teaching activities and curriculum development in Danish and/or English.

Complete the structured PhD program, including coursework and teaching duties, within the 3-year timeframe.

Engage with external academic or legal stakeholders when applicable.

SDU PhD Fellowship Program (Eligibility Criteria)
To apply for the SDU PhD in Law, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Hold a Master’s degree in Law or a closely related field.

Demonstrate a strong academic background and research potential.
-
Show an interest in contributing to international-level legal scholarship.

Fluency in Danish and/or English (written and spoken) for research and teaching purposes.

Practical experience in the legal field is a plus but not mandatory.

SDU PhD Fellowship Program (Application Requirements)
Your application must include the following documents:

Motivated cover letter outlining your interest and suitability.

Curriculum Vitae (CV) including educational background and work experience.

Master’s degree certificate and full transcripts.

Completed application form (available on the SDU website).

Project description (max. 5 pages of 2,400 characters per page, including references and appendices).

Abstract of the proposed project (max. 250 words).

Up to two publications, if applicable (for example, problem formulation and conclusion of your Master’s thesis).

Documentation of teaching experience or other academic communication skills.
Important: Upload your documents as two PDF files—one containing the cover letter, and the second including all other materials. Combined file size must not exceed 10 MB.
Note: Documents not in Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish must be translated into English.
