About the Green Foreign Policy Fellowship

Although the world has seen significant progress in environmental politics, the field of green foreign policy remains relatively underdeveloped. Despite over two decades since the adoption of the Global Greens Charter, global diplomacy continues to be dominated by traditional, realist frameworks. Meanwhile, the planet faces mounting climate crises and shifting geopolitical power dynamics.

Recognizing this need for alternative narratives, the Heinrich Böll Foundation’s Thessaloniki Office has launched this fellowship to foster emerging voices in climate diplomacy, green security policy, and sustainable international relations.

Green Foreign Policy Fellowship Objectives

The Green Foreign Policy Fellowship aims to:

Promote Learning and Networking: Fellows will deepen their knowledge of environmental diplomacy while connecting with a diverse global network of experts, policymakers, and advocates.
Encourage Data-Driven Discourse: The program will foster cross-regional dialogue informed by research and real-world insights on green foreign and security policy.
Identify Key Gaps in Policy: Fellows will spotlight under-researched or overlooked areas and facilitate discussions that can shape actionable change.
Develop Innovative Alternatives: The goal is to challenge conventional security frameworks and develop proposals rooted in justice, sustainability, and peace.

Fellowship Structure & Expectations

Running from July 2025 to May 2026, this fellowship is divided into two main phases:

Material Production Phase (First Semester): Fellows will develop policy papers, articles, or research materials based on their chosen topic.
Networking and Presentation Phase (Second Semester): Fellows will present their findings and engage with stakeholders across the green foreign policy space.

Submit monthly progress reports.

Green Foreign Policy Fellowship Benefits

Selected participants will receive:

A €6,000 gross stipend in the first semester to support research and content development.
