Natural ways to keep your teeth healthy

Natural ways to keep your teeth healthy: Proper dental hygiene is required to maintain the health of the teeth and gums.

Healthy gums and teeth enable you to eat properly, enjoy tasty food, and maintain a beautiful smile without experiencing toothache or discomfort.

The following are some tips for maintaining strong and healthy teeth:

1. Brush twice daily for two minutes each time.

The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth for two minutes, twice a day (ADA). This will maintain your teeth in excellent condition. Brushing your teeth and tongue with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste thoroughly cleanses your mouth of food and bacteria. Additionally, brushing removes particles that eat away at your teeth and result in cavities.

2. Brushing your teeth in the morning combats morning breath

The temperature in the mouth is 98.6oF (37oC). It is warm and moist, and is densely packed with food particles and microorganisms. These conditions result in the formation of plaque. When plaque accumulates on your teeth, it calcifies, or hardens, to become tartar, also known as calculus. Not only can tartar irritate the gums, but it can also promote gum disease and poor breath.

3. Avoid excessive brushing

If you brush your teeth more than twice a day for a total of four minutes, you risk wearing away the enamel layer that protects your teeth.

When tooth enamel is missing, a layer of dentin is exposed. Dentin is perforated with minute holes that lead to nerve terminals. When these are stimulated, you may experience a variety of different types of pain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 20% of adults have experienced tooth discomfort or sensitivity.

4. Avoid turbocharging

Additionally, it is possible to brush too vigorously. Brush your teeth in the manner in which you would an eggshell. If your toothbrush appears to have been sat on, you are using excessive pressure.

Enamel is sufficiently strong to protect teeth from everything that occurs inside the mouth, from eating and drinking to initiating the digestive process. Children and adolescents have softer enamel than adults, making their teeth more susceptible to cavities and food and drink erosion.

5. Ensure that you floss daily.

Want to ensure that your next exam requires as little scraping as possible? Flossing dislodges particles that brushing leaves behind. Additionally, it eliminates plaque, hence preventing the formation of tartar. While plaque is easily removed with a toothbrush, tartar removal requires the assistance of a dentist.

6. It makes no difference when you do it

Finally, the age-old question “Which comes first, flossing or brushing?” has a solution. It makes no difference, according to the ADA, as long as you do it daily.

7. Avoid soda

Consumption of soft drinks is one of numerous major causes of dental decay. Carbonated beverages are a triple hazard to your teeth.

Apart from eroding tooth enamel, carbonation, sugar, and acids promote the growth of germs in your mouth and on your teeth, all of which contribute to the development of cavities.

8. Visit a dentist on a regular basis

Experts recommend that you visit your dentist every six months. A dentist will check for cavities that the naked eye cannot see and will also search for possible problems and provide solutions.

9. Abstain from smoking

Smoking causes tooth and tongue discoloration. Additionally, it can cause poor breath.

10. Consume water

Water continues to be the optimal beverage for general health, including oral health. Replace soda and other sugary beverages with water to benefit your teeth.
