Oil is obtained from the Niger-Delta States, which are mostly located in the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones of the country, which produce the vast bulk of Nigeria’s crude oil. The following is the current full list of refineries in Nigeria today and their locations:
PORT HARCOURT REFINING COMPANY (PHRC)
PHRC consists of two refineries, namely, the old refinery and the modern refinery, which are both located in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The former refinery, which was built in 1965 and put into service in 1966, was intended to have a refining capacity of 60,000 barrels per stream day (bpsd). The old refinery is located in the Area 5 process area of the Port Harcourt Refining Company, which is comprised of several units, including the crude distillation unit (CDU), the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) unit, and the platform unit. The platform unit is the largest of the units (CRU). This component of Area 5, which is the former refinery, also has the power and utility sector, which is equipped with turbo generators and boilers that can generate electricity for the refinery. There is a ready supply of maintenance professionals who are responsible for the routine, planned, and emergency maintenance repairs of equipment on hand.
The Port Harcourt Refining Company’s new refinery, which was built in 1989 and has a capacity of 150,000 barrels per stream day, was officially inaugurated in 1989. (bpsd). The Port Harcourt Refining Company’s Area 1 – 4 process areas have been taken over by the new refinery. An oil refinery in Area 1 houses a crude distillation unit (CDU) that produces finished petroleum products such as kerosene, automobile gas oil (AGO), straight-run naphtha (SRN), straight-run gasoline (SRG), and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) (LPG). Area 2 contains the naphtha hydrotreating unit (NHU), the catalytic reformative unit (CRU), the kero hydrotreating unit (KHU), the continuous catalyst regeneration unit (CCRU), the hydrogen purification unit, the fuel gas vaporizer unit, the sour water treatment unit, and the caustic treatment unit. Area 3 contains the naphtha hydrotreating unit (NHU), the catalytic reformative unit (CRU), the kero hydrotreating unit Area 3 contains the fluid catalytic cracking unit (FCCU), as well as the, had concentration unit, had treatment unit, and the oxidation unit. KADUNA REFINING AND PETROCHEMICAL COMPANY (KRPC)
In order to serve the rapidly expanding Northern markets, the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company Limited are ideally placed in Kaduna. The facility, which covers an area of 289 square kilometers, was built with safety, ease of maintenance, and cost-cutting in mind when it was constructed. Developed in conjunction with engineers from the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the refinery’s layout was created by King Wilkinson, a Dutch business based in the Hague, Netherlands. The contract for the construction of the refinery was awarded to the Chiyoda Chemical Engineering and Construction Company of Yokohama, Japan, in 1977. The refinery was completed in 1981. The Fuel Plant was completed in 1980 and put into operation immediately; however, the Lubes Plant and the Petrochemical Plant were not put into operation until 1983 and 1986, respectively.
In 1988, the KRPC was formed when a 30,000 MT/yr Linear Alkyl Benzene Plant, which was then under the control of the NNPC’s Petroleum Sector, was merged with the Lubes Plant, the Fuel Plant, and the Petrochemical Plant to form a single subsidiary. The Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company produce a variety of end products, including liquefied petroleum gas, petrol motor spirit, automotive gas oil, kerosene, fuel oil, sulphur, bitumen, and waxes, among others. WARRI REFINING AND PETROCHEMICAL COMPANY (WRPC)
A limited business was formed in November 1988 as a result of the merging of the then Warri Refining and the Ekpan Petrochemical Plants, which had previously been a joint venture. Local crude will be refined and processed at a rate of 125,000 barrels per stream day (bpsd) at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company. Facilities such as nitrogen plants, gas turbines, and steam turbo generators, a water treatment plant, compressed air systems, and a refinery are all available at the WRPC to aid in the operation and functionality of the facility: petrochemical effluent water treatment plants, gas turbines, and steam turbo generators. DANGOTE OIL REFINERY, LEKKI FREE TRADE ZONE, LAGOS
The Dangote Oil Refinery, which will be built in 2635, is expected to have a capacity of 650,000 barrels per stream day upon completion, making it Africa’s largest oil refinery. It would be the largest pipeline infrastructure in the world, with an 1100-kilometer pipeline network capable of transporting 3 billion standard cubic feet of natural gas per day. The Dangote Oil Refinery would be capable of processing both local Nigerian crude and imported crude from around the world. The facility’s 400-megawatt power plant is capable of meeting all of the refinery’s electricity needs on a continuous basis.
