A political party is a group of people who share the same political philosophy and hold the same political beliefs. Organizations that compete in elections by nominating candidates to run for political positions in a country are collectively referred to as political parties. They are crucial institutions of democracy because they provide citizens with the opportunity to vote for their favorite candidate when an election is taking place. Nigeria’s ruling party is referred to as the ruling party, while those who have lost elections are referred to as the opposition, and they hold the ruling party, which is the government in power, accountable for every decision.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the primary electoral organization in Nigeria that monitors elections and whose tasks include the following, currently has eighteen (18) political parties that are duly registered and recognized.

Organize, carry out, and supervise the elections for the offices of President and Vice-President, Governor and Deputy Governor of a State, and for the membership of the Senate, the House of Representatives, and the House of Assembly of each State of the federation;
Parties to the National Assembly must be registered in accordance with the provisions of the constitution and the Act of the National Assembly.

The registration of those competent to vote, as well as the preparation, maintenance, and revision of the voter register, are all responsibilities of the Secretary of State for the purpose of any election under this constitution.
Political campaigns should be monitored, and laws and regulations should be established to regulate political parties, respectively.
Voter and civic education should be conducted, as should the promotion of awareness of solid democratic election processes.
Conduct any referendum that is needed to be conducted under the provisions of the 1999 Constitution or any other law or Act of the National Assembly, as the case may be.
