How to use WhatsApp on an Apple Watch: Despite the absence of an official app, WhatsApp may be used on an Apple Watch.

WhatsApp is the world’s most popular messaging software, but its owners, Facebook, have seen no reason to create a WhatsApp version for Apple Watch. However, this does not preclude you from using WhatsApp on your Apple Watch. Here’s a quick overview of how to get started and what you can and cannot do with WhatsApp on Apple gadgets.

Can you get WhatsApp on Apple Watch?

At the time of writing, the proprietors of WhatsApp, Facebook, had not yet released an official Apple Watch version. Many believe such an app will never be released, considering Facebook’s goal to merge WhatsApp more closely with Facebook Messenger and Instagram Chat.

However, some WhatsApp functionality is still available on your Apple Watch in the form of new message alerts. Additionally, you can respond to messages using voice dictation. You cannot, however, type message responses or see material contained within messages, such as photos.

How to connect and detach WhatsApp from an Apple Watch

To begin, turn on Bluetooth on your iPhone and attach your Apple Watch to that connection. To verify, navigate to Settings—>Bluetooth.

Obviously, you’ll need WhatsApp installed on your iPhone and WhatsApp notifications enabled in your iPhone’s settings. On your iPhone, navigate to Settings—>Notifications—>WhatsApp. Allow Notifications is toggled on, and all three alerts are enabled.

Now open the Apple Watch app (if you haven’t already, you can download it here). Navigate to Notifications and scroll down to the MIRROR IPHONE ALERTS FROM area. At the bottom, click on WhatsApp.

All WhatsApp notifications that you receive on your iPhone will now appear on your Apple Watch. To prevent future notifications, just shut off WhatsApp in the Notifications menu.

How to look at and respond to WhatsApp messages on the Apple Watch

When a new message arrives in WhatsApp on your iPhone, a notice appears on your Watch’s face. It will display the WhatsApp logo and the sender’s name. It’s worth noting that you cannot view previous WhatsApp messages; you can only view current ones.

To read the message, tap it. Bear in mind that photos will seem fuzzy and unviewable on the Watch, and voice messages will not be audible. To do so, you’ll need to access your phone.

Dismissing the message will remove it from the screen and mark it as read in the WhatsApp iOS application. If you tap Dismiss, you will never be able to restore the message on the Apple Watch screen.

Reply to a text message by tapping. You then have three response options. The first is a series of brief pre-configured responses dubbed Suggestions. By tapping on one, it will be sent directly to the other person’s WhatsApp.

Additionally, you can scribble with your finger in the center of the screen, and the Watch will (hopefully) be able to read and convert your writing to text.

Are there any third-party WhatsApp applications available for the Apple Watch?

There are numerous third-party WhatsApp applications — some are excellent, while others are less so. However, in terms of ones that work with the Apple Watch, there is one that addresses several of the points raised above.

WatchChat 2 is an app that adds a slew of previously unavailable WhatsApp features to the Apple Watch. While this is not an official WhatsApp app, it has at least a 4.5-star rating on the App Store, with many users complimenting the customer service. The app is available for free with a $2.99 in-app purchase.

Thus, what service does it provide? You may read previously sent messages, listen to and send voice messages, and enter responses using a basic keyboard, much as you did with older-style mobile phones. Additionally, you can watch videos, see stickers and photographs, and start a new discussion.

The only disadvantage is that you must exit the WhatsApp beta software, which supports multi-device use. Otherwise, WatchChat 2 will not function.

Is it possible to answer WhatsApp calls on an Apple Watch?

At the moment, no. Apple Watch users are unable to respond to WhatsApp phone calls. You will receive notifications about WhatsApp calls, but you must use your phone or the desktop software to initiate a call.

When a message arrives on my Apple Watch, it does not vibrate or sound notification.

If you’re simply missing an audio tone, your Watch is very certainly set to Do Not Disturb. To disable it, swipe up from the bottom of your watch face to enter the settings. If the red bell icon has a diagonal line running through it, press the icon once to remove the red line.

If your Watch does not vibrate in response to a notification, open the Watch app and navigate to Sound & Haptics. Ascertain that Silent Mode is turned off and Haptic Alerts are enabled.
