Bola Ahmed Tinubu Biography, Political Career and Networth

Who is Bola Ahmed Tinubu?

Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu is a Nigerian accountant and politician who has served as the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) since the formation of the party in 2013. He was born on March 29, 1952. Prior to that, he held the positions of Governor of Lagos State from 1999 until 2007, as well as Senator for Lagos West during the brief Third Republic. In January of 2022, he made public his desire to compete for the nomination of President of Nigeria by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the presidential election of 2023.

Tinubu began his life in the southwestern part of Nigeria and went on to complete his accounting education in the United States before going on to work for a number of years in other countries. He went back to Nigeria in the middle of the 1980s and continued working in financial management until he entered politics in 1992 as a candidate for the senatorial seat representing Lagos West under the banner of the Social Democratic Party. He was successful in winning that seat. Tinubu became an activist and joined the movement of the National Democratic Coalition after the Senate was dissolved in 1993 by the dictator Sani Abacha. He campaigned for the restoration of democracy as part of the movement. Tinubu came back to Nigeria in 1998, despite the fact that he had been forced into exile in 1994. This was because the death of Abacha in 1998 marked the beginning of the transition to the Fourth Republic.

Tinubu, a member of the Alliance for Democracy, was victorious in the first gubernatorial election held in Lagos State after the transition of power. He defeated Dapo Sarumi, a candidate for the People’s Democratic Party, as well as Nosirudeen Kekere-Ekun, a candidate for the All People’s Party. In the election held four years later, he defeated Funsho Williams, the candidate for the PDP, to secure a second term as president. Tinubu’s two terms as mayor of Lagos were marked by his attempts to modernize the city as well as his feuds with the federal government, which was controlled by the PDP. Tinubu was able to maintain his status as one of the most influential politicians in Nigeria even after he stepped down from office in 2007. This was made possible by the fact that his allies frequently filled high offices throughout the southwest and that he was instrumental in the formation of the All Progressives Congress in 2013. Tinubu’s career has been hindered by allegations of corruption and inquiries into the veracity of his personal history for a significant portion of its duration, making the controversial figure’s position extremely precarious.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu Political career

His entry into politics began in 1992 when he joined the Social Democratic Party. He was a member of the Peoples Front faction of the party, which was led by Shehu Musa Yar’Adua and comprised of other politicians including Umaru Yar’Adua, Atiku Abubakar, Baba Gana Kingibe, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Abdullahi Aliyu Sumaila, Magaji Abdullahi, Dapo Sarumi, and Yo During the brief existence of the Nigerian Third Republic, he won election to the Senate and was given the responsibility of representing the Lagos West constituency.

Tinubu became a founding member of the pro-democracy National Democratic Coalition after the results of the presidential elections that took place on June 12, 1993 were overturned. The National Democratic Coalition was a group that rallied support for the restoration of democracy and the recognition of Moshood Abiola as the winner of the election that took place on June 12. After General Sani Abacha seized power as military head of state in 1994, he fled the country and went into exile. He did not return to the country until 1998, after the death of the military dictator, which marked the beginning of the transition to the Fourth Nigerian Republic.

During the time leading up to the elections in 1999, Abraham Adesanya and Ayo Adebanjo, the leaders of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), considered Bola Tinubu to be one of their proteges. He went on to defeat Funsho Williams and Wahab Dosunmu, a former Minister of Works and Housing, and win the AD primaries for the Lagos State governorship elections. He went on to become the new governor of Lagos State. In January of 1999, he ran on the AD ticket for the position of Governor of Lagos State and was ultimately successful in winning the election.

After the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won the April 2007 elections by an overwhelming margin, Tinubu became actively involved in the negotiations to form a “mega-party” that would be able to compete with the PDP. This took place in the year 2007. Tinubu’s negotiations in creating a “mega opposition” party became paid off in February 2013, with the merger of Nigeria’s three biggest opposition parties into the All Progressives Congress. These parties were the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and the new PDP (nPDP), which was a faction of serving governors of the then-ruling People’s (APC).

Former military head of state General Muhammadu Buhari, who commanded widespread following in Northern Nigeria and had previously competed in the presidential elections as the APC presidential candidate in 2003, 2007, and 2011, received Tinubu’s support in 2014. Buhari is the leader of the CPC faction of the APC, which is a part of the All Progressives Congress. Tinubu wanted to be Buhari’s vice presidential candidate at first, but he eventually gave up that ambition in favor of Yemi Osibanjo, an ally of his who had previously served as commissioner of justice. In 2015, Buhari led the APC to victory, which brought an end to the PDP’s sixteen-year rule of Nigeria and marked the first time in Nigeria’s history that an incumbent president was defeated by an opposition candidate. The PDP had ruled the country for the previous sixteen years.

Tinubu has gone on to play an important role in the Buhari administration, supporting the policies of the government and holding onto the internal party reins in lieu of his long-held and widely-rumored aspiration to run for president. In 2019, he lent his support to President Buhari’s campaign for re-election, which ultimately resulted in Atiku Abubakar’s defeat. It is believed that the removal of Tinubu’s ally and party chairman Adams Oshiomole in 2020, which followed an internal party crisis and led to his removal, was done with the intention of scuttling Tinubu’s presidential prospects ahead of the 2023 election.

Tinubu gave President Buhari the formal form of his announcement that he intended to run for president of Nigeria on January 10, 2022. This was the first time that Tinubu had made his intention known to anyone.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Lagos State Governor

Tinubu made a promise of 10,000 housing units for the underprivileged when he took office in May 1999, but he did not fulfill this promise. During the eight years that he was in office, he made significant investments in the education system of the state. In addition, he decreased the total number of schools in the state by handing back ownership of many schools to their original owners who had already established themselves there. In addition to this, he began the construction of new roads, which was essential in order to cater to the requirements of the rapidly expanding population in the state.

In April of 2003, Tinubu was successful in winning re-election to his position as governor, and he did so alongside a new deputy governor named Femi Pedro. During those elections, the People’s Democratic Party was victorious in gaining control of every other state in the South West. He was embroiled in a conflict with the federal government that was controlled by Olusegun Obasanjo over the issue of whether or not Lagos State had the authority to establish new Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in order to accommodate the requirements of its large population. As a result of the controversy, the federal government seized funds that were intended to be distributed to local councils in the state. [source: missing citation] During the latter part of his term in office, he was involved in a series of ongoing conflicts with PDP powers such as Adeseye Ogunlewe, a former senator from Lagos State who had become minister of works, and Bode George, the southwest chairman of the PDP. Both of these individuals were in positions of authority within the party.

As a result of Pedro’s announcement that he intends to run for governor, relations between Tinubu and Femi Pedro, the deputy governor, have become increasingly strained. Pedro was a candidate for the position of AC candidate for governor in the 2007 elections; however, he withdrew his name from consideration for the position on the day before the party nomination. He switched parties but remained in his position as deputy governor after making the switch to the Labour Party. The 29th of May, 2007, was the day that Tinubu’s successor, Babatunde Fashola of the Action Congress, took office, bringing an end to Tinubu’s term as Governor of Lagos State.
