5 Types Of Communication and How To Improve Them: Communication is the interchange of ideas and thoughts between two or more individuals via means such as writing, gestures, symbols, and speech. It is the continual transfer of information between two or more individuals, one of whom is the transmitter and the other is the receiver.

 

Communication is a necessary component of our daily activities. From the definitions above, it can be argued that for communication to occur, more than one person must be present as either the transmitter or receiver. Additionally, there must be an understanding of the original information that was intended to be transmitted.

When Is It Said That Communication Is Complete?

Only when the recipient comprehends the information intended by the sender is communication successful and full.

Communication’s Fundamental Components
The four fundamental components of communication are as follows:

a. Sender: The information must originate with one party, referred to as the sender, and end with another, referred to as the receiver. Without the sender, there can be no communication.

b. Message: This is the substance of the information that the sender wishes to communicate. Information is a form of data that has been processed. It is organized and meaningful because it is processed data. As a result, when a message loses its fundamental meaningfulness, it ceases to be a communication.

When a message is delivered in a language that the recipient does not understand, the message remains information as long as it can be comprehended.

c. Channel: This is the means by which information is communicated. This can be accomplished through direct engagement or through the use of technological and communication devices, the internet, and written materials. Without these mediums, the sender is unable to communicate his ideas and thoughts to the receiver, regardless of how wonderfully constructed they are.

d. Recipient: This is the individual to whom the information is addressed. Additionally, it covers anyone who come upon the content even if they are not part of the intended audience. The receipt of information is the point at which the communication process is said to conclude, along with the receiver’s comprehension of the information.

Communication Styles and How to Improve Them

Five distinct modes of communication exist:

  • 1. Verbal exchanges
  • 2.Non-verbal communication is a type of non-verbal communication.
  • 3. Communication via written form
  • 4. Communication through images
  • 5. Communication via audiovisual means

1. Verbal Communication: This is a form of communication in which messages are sent and received using words. This is also referred to as oral communication or speech communication.

Due to the fact that verbal communication requires the use of words, it encompasses both spoken and written words. Sign language is occasionally referred to as verbal communication. Verbal communication is defined as any communication that involves the use of spoken words.

Verbal communication can take the shape of face-to-face engagement, telephone conversations, speeches, teleconferences, or videoconferences, among other formats.

Verbal communication is irreversible in the sense that once expressed, it cannot be reversed.

The most prevalent and accessible mode of communication is verbal communication. Its necessity pervades our daily actions. Indeed, it is seen as indispensable.

Verbal communication is effective not only because of the sender’s abilities, but also because of the receiver’s listening abilities. Verbal communication incorporates aspects from different modes of communication, and these elements contribute to the efficiency of speech, such as gestures, body language, tone, articulation, mood, breakage, tone clarity, and eye contact.

How to hone your verbal communication skills

In verbal communication, it is the sender’s job to produce information in a manner that is understandable to the recipient. A typical statement goes as follows: “I am accountable for what I say, and you are accountable for what you understand.”

The most accurate understanding of this term is that both the sender and the receiver/listener share responsibility for efficient communication. The statement simply implies that once the sender has discharged everything necessary in his or her own part to effect a sound communication, it is up to the receiver/listener to do the same in his or her own part.

Argumentation is the first step toward effective verbal communication. The clarity, quality, and sharpness of speech is referred to as articulation. The quality of a speech is determined by its substantial content. When a verbal message is adequately stated, it is assumed that the information will be understood by an average individual in the position of the recipient. While articulating the facts, another critical factor to consider is the recipient’s situation in life. If the intended audience is large, straightforward language should be used.

When verbal communication is used to convey information, appropriate intonation should be used. Simply put, intonation is the rise and fall of the voice when speaking. 2. Nonverbal Communication: Nonverbal communication encompasses all nonverbal modes of communication. Nonverbal communication, in particular, is any form of communication that is not written or spoken, such as gestures, facial expressions, body language, silence, signs and symbols, and so on.

Nonverbal communication can occur inadvertently or during verbal communication. Nonverbal communication is occasionally thought to be more audible than verbal communication. This is debatable, however it is true that nonverbal communication may communicate more effectively where verbal communication fails.

Now, allow me to illustrate a nonverbal communication. For instance, if a person is accused of stealing something from another, natural human instinct typically compels the person to categorically deny the allegation if he is not guilty. 3. Written Communication: This is a permanent form of communication. This is when the sender conveys the intended information to the receiver using written materials. Written information is always given more weight than oral information since it is official and deliberate. Written communication also extends to those typed using electronic gadgets and online medium.

Written communication refers to all communications that involves the use of language which can be written and be read, whether on a paper on by electronic or digital methods.

Written communications are easier to retain, easy to communicate complex subjects, has aspect of permanence, sometimes more successful in communicating, and it is verifiable. Written communication allows people to share thoughts and ideas regardless of distance. The easiest technique to improve on written communication is to read fictions and nonfictions.

4. Visual Communication: This is a mode of communication in which images, pictorial or graphical representations are used. It encompasses all of the visual components in a multimedia presentation, in contrast to standard text or audio.

Visual communication techniques include the use of signs, symbols, drawings, animated GIFs, charts, graphs, and films, as well as industrial designs, maps, and advertisement animations.

5. Audiovisual Communication: This is a mode of communication that combines audio and visual elements. It is the usage of a media that blends audio and visual content with the intent of communicating with an audience.

Effective Communication Obstacles

This comprises specific barriers to the free flow and reception of information during conversation. They include the following:
