Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a Master’s degree in economics, environmental science, or a related discipline.
- Possess strong quantitative skills (econometrics, spatial analysis, or data science).
- Demonstrate an interest in marine sustainability and energy transition.
- Have excellent English communication skills (Dutch is an advantage but not mandatory).
- Show motivation for teaching, supervising students, and working collaboratively in research teams.

About the Research Project
The PhD position focuses on the impact of offshore wind farms on commercial fisheries in the Dutch North Sea. The research will:
- Identify winners and losers in the transition to renewable energy.
- Analyze how fishers adapt to spatial changes in marine regulations.
- Provide economic decision-support tools to guide inclusive and sustainable marine policies.
This position is embedded within the Environmental Economics and Natural Resources Group and supervised by Dr. Andries Richter and Dr. Anna Abatayo, in close collaboration with the NO-REGRETS consortium (including NIOZ, TU Delft, CBS, and Naturalis).
Key Responsibilities of the PhD Candidate
- Analyze geospatial fisheries data related to offshore wind farm locations.
- Conduct fieldwork and surveys with stakeholders.
