About the Digital Humanism Fellowship

The Digital Humanism Fellowship is part of the IWM’s mission to promote interdisciplinary research at the intersection of digitalization, society, and human values. Each semester, the program hosts one senior fellow (by invitation) and two junior visiting fellows to collaborate, research, and engage with pressing digital transformation issues.

Selected fellows will become part of an international academic community and contribute to ongoing debates around technology, ethics, policy, and human behavior in a networked society.


 Fellowship Location & Duration

  • Location: Vienna, Austria
  • Host: Institute for Human Sciences (IWM)
  • Duration: 3 months (Autumn 2025)
  • Start Date: Typically begins on the 1st day of the month

Fellowship Benefits

Fellows receive financial and institutional support to focus entirely on their research:

  • PhD candidates: EUR 2,750/month
  • Postdoctoral researchers: EUR 3,300/month
  • Additional Benefits:

All costs are covered for the full three-month residency in Vienna.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the junior visiting fellowships, you must:

  • Be currently enrolled in a PhD program or have completed a PhD within the past four years
  • Have a strong academic background in relevant fields such as sociology, digital studies, philosophy, political science, or technology ethics
  • Submit a complete application package in English

Note: Senior fellowships are by invitation only.


Required Documents

Applicants must compile the following into one single PDF file:

  1. Motivation Letter: Explaining how your research aligns with the IWM mission and how you would benefit from the fellowship.
  2. Short Project Description: Max 550 characters
  3. Detailed Project Proposal: Max 7,500 characters (including: objectives, state of the art, methods, and work plan)
  4. Curriculum Vitae (CV): Including academic background and list of publications
  5. Two Recommendation Letters: To be submitted directly by your referees via a link sent after your application
