Human Frontier Science Program Postdoctoral Fellowship Types

  1. Long-Term Fellowships (LTF): For candidates with a Ph.D. in biological sciences who are looking to expand into a new research area.
  2. Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships (CDF): For candidates with a Ph.D. outside the life sciences (e.g., physics, chemistry, engineering, etc.) who aim to transition into life science research.

Human Frontier Science Program Postdoctoral Eligibility Criteria

  • Language Requirement: English
  • Eligible Countries: All
  • Must conduct research in a country different from where they completed their Ph.D. or previous postdoctoral studies
  • Must hold a research doctorate (Ph.D.) or equivalent by the fellowship start date
  • Must have at least one lead-author, full-length research paper in an international peer-reviewed journal

Human Frontier Science Program Postdoctoral Application Process

Step 1: Letter of Intent (Due May 7, 2025)

Submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) containing:

  • Title and keywords of the proposed research
  • Research summary
  • Personal information and CV
  • Ph.D. field and title
  • Proposed host institution and supervisor
  • List of publications

Review Process: The LOI will be peer-reviewed, and selected applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal.

Step 2: Full Proposal (Due September 25, 2025, for invited applicants)

The full application must include:

  • Detailed research plan
  • Explanation of how the project is a significant change from prior research
  • Justification of how the project is frontier research
  • Statement on why the chosen host lab is suitable
  • Updated publication list
  • Recommendation letters (2 referees)
  • Host supervisor’s recommendation and mentorship plan
  • PDF copies of lead-author publications
