Who Can Apply?

The Fellowship is open to both current PhD students and prospective candidates (including undergraduate, master’s students, and professionals) with plans to enroll in a PhD program.

For Current PhD Students:

  • Must be enrolled full-time in a PhD program at a recognized university in Africa.
  • Should be in the early stages of the program (not beyond the first year of study).
  • Must be pursuing research in Computer Science or related fields.
  • Must remain enrolled in the PhD program throughout the Fellowship duration.
  • Cannot be current Google employees or immediate family members of employees.
  • Cannot be receiving another corporate fellowship.

For Undergraduate/Master’s Students and Professionals:

  • Must plan to begin a full-time PhD program in Computer Science or a related field at a university in Africa within the year of the award.

  • Professionals should be affiliated with an organization based in Africa.
  • The award is conditional upon successful enrollment into a qualifying PhD program in 2025.
  • Fellowship does not guarantee admission into a PhD program—applicants must complete the standard admission process.
