Apply Now to Work and Live in the United Kingdom: African Teachers Needed in UK Schools

Do you want to Work and Live in the United Kingdom? Take advantage of the the special UK Work Visa for  teachers. Imagine having the chance to bring your passion for teaching from Nigeria to the United Kingdom. It’s not just a dream – it’s a real opportunity! UK schools are eagerly seeking talented Nigerian teachers to join their teams. In this post, we will explore how Nigerian educators can embark on this exciting journey, enriching their careers while making a meaningful impact on UK students.

The United Kingdom, through its Department for Education, offers teaching jobs and the opportunity to work and live in the United Kingdom to people from Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda and other countries. They’re primarily looking for people who can teach subjects like languages, math, and science to students aged 11 to 16.

You have the “Qualified Teacher Status” or QTS to teach in most English schools. It’s like a certification that shows you are qualified to teach in the United Kingdom. The UK Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) gives this certification to teachers in England and also to qualified teachers from other countries.

In the 2023/24 UK teacher recruitment, they prioritize people from Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda and other countries specializing in these subjects. If you’re eligible for QTS, you can apply for the teaching program to work and live in the United Kingdom. This is all part of the UK’s effort to ensure qualified teachers worldwide can teach in their schools.

Eligibility Criteria

Through its education agency, the UK government highlighted that awarding overseas qualified teacher status (QTS) to teachers from other countries will be based on assessing their experience and qualifications against a set of criteria.

  • Possession of an undergraduate degree of the same academic standard as a UK bachelor’s degree, as verified by UK ENIC.
  • Must have completed teacher’s training that matches the standard of a level 6 qualification and is at least the same length as an English initial teacher training course – for instance, a Bachelor of Education or a Postgraduate Certificate in Education.
  • Have completed a course with content that is practically and pedagogically focused.
  • Be qualified to teach children aged between 5 and 16 years of age.
  • Have at least one school year (a minimum of 9 months, including holidays but excluding time out taken for any other reason) of professional experience working as a teacher after qualifying.
  • Have the professional status needed to be a teacher in the country where you qualified and not be subject to any conditions or restrictions on your practice.
  • Meet a certain standard of English language proficiency (e.g., CEFR B2 level of English proficiency, IELTS SELT Consortium – 5.5, LanguageCert – 33/50, Pearson – 59, Trinity College London – Pass, PSI Services (UK) Ltd – Pass).

International qualifications

  • If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, your assessment-only teacher training provider may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ showing how they compare to UK qualifications.

Special requirements for Nigerian teachers include the following:

  • A qualification in teaching that meets the standard of a level 6 qualification, qualifying the candidate to teach children aged 11 to 16 in mathematics, languages, or science.
  • A bachelor’s degree that comprises at least 50% mathematics, science, or a language (excluding English) taught in English state schools, for example, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, Mathematics and science qualifications).
